GenealogyWise is Down

Ok, I’m having withdrawal. After five solid days of hanging out on GenealogyWise.com, the new social networking site for genealogists, it has been down this morning for at kleast four hours. At least I HOPE it’s down, because I had finally found a social networking home. I never could get into facebook, nd I use twitter to keep up on politics and current events. But GenealogyWise was fast becoming my home. I had made many groups, and was especially loving my “Scrap Your family History” group, one very close to my heart as you can imagine.

As of when the site went down I had about 82 members in the group, and it has really lit a fire under me to get out the ole PSP program and dust it off, because these people are chomping at the bit to learn. Now it’s down and I’m totally at loose ends. Hopefully it’s just a technical problem, what with so many hundreds flocking to it every day. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Genealogy – The Perfect Avocation for an Armchair Detective

I have wondered many times what it is about genealogy research that is so appealing to me. It’s more than just knowing the names of ancestors, more even than finding out their individual stories. There’s something in the thrill of the hunt, of piecing together all the pieces, reading between lines, following the slightest clue and having it pan out, and the elation that follows when your search is finally culminated and your answer is found.

Except that every answer only open new doors, new mysteries, new clues, and the search begins all over again. So I think, for me at least, the thrill is in the solving of a mystery.

All my life I have I have been an avid reader of mystery stories. I watch all the mystery shows on TV. I’ve also done puzzles all my life too, and not crosswords that require you to just have a knowledge of words, but the ones that make you think and reason to get to the answer. And I always had a secret desire to be a detective, one of those daydreams you have when no one’s looking.

Doing family history research fulfills all those cravings for me. I get to gather the facts, make assumptions, track down the proof or evidence to the contrary, and keep going till I work it all out and finally arrive at the culprit, er, uh, the ancestor! What better way could there possibly be to spend my days?

GenealogyWise: The Facbook for Genealogists!

I have discovered a wonderful new social networking site called GenealogyWise. it’s a genealogy social network that some are calling the “Facebook for genealogists.”

This is a fantastic site for us geneholics. In the span of several hours I had over 10 friends added and had created several of my own groups and joined others. I was like a kid in a candy shop.

I have finally found a social networking home, and I can see already that it is going to fill a void that I have felt for a very long time.

Learning About Making Widgets

Today I learned how to make personalized widgets, and I made some for my published articles on other sites. Now you can easily see what my latest articles are and go there without my having to constantly update the list. How cool is that?

One of my publishers, Ezine Articles.com, provides a code for a widget to their writers, but my otehr two do not. I found this rpetty cool site on the net that lets you make a widget for any site you want to and so I made the other two. What do you think of them?

Update on my cousin

Well I did get ahold of my cousin, and I was totally shocked to find out that she has been holding a “hamper” full of stuff for me that was put together for me by my grandmother and my aunt, intended to be for my hope chest. So whatever is in it has to be about 55 years old. And she has kept it for me all these years in hopes of finding me! I hope I can get it somehow really soon, it’s very exciting.

Almost Ready

Well I’ve worked all holiday weekend and I finally have the wordpress site about ready to say it’s live. I will finish porting things from the old site over the next week or two, but I feel it has enough to call itself a web site.

I really must say I am more and more impressed with wordpress every day. I wish I had discovered it sooner.

Moving to Personal Domain

I first set up my blog on wordpress.com, which is an excellent venue by the way, but I wanted to have the ability to add some additional plugins to the basic package, so I have begun the move to wordpress installed on my own domain. It won’t be active here until I get things all set up.
